E-file Rejected IND-031-04: Prior-Year AGI Mismatch

IND-031-04 means the prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) you entered to verify your identity doesn't match what the IRS has on file for you (the primary taxpayer). The fix is to enter the exact AGI from last year's accepted return, or 0 if that return wasn't processed in time.

Symptoms

  • Your e-file is rejected with code IND-031-04.
  • The message refers to the primary taxpayer's prior-year AGI not matching IRS records.
  • Re-submitting with the same AGI keeps getting rejected.

What causes it

  • You entered an AGI that doesn't match last year's filed return.
  • Last year's return was filed late or hadn't finished processing when you filed this year.
  • You're a first-time filer, so the IRS has no prior AGI on record.
  • You used a rounded or estimated number instead of the exact AGI.

How to fix it

1Enter the exact prior-year AGI

  1. Find last year's filed federal return and locate the Adjusted Gross Income line (Form 1040).
  2. Enter that exact whole-dollar number when TurboTax asks for your prior-year AGI.
  3. Do not use this year's AGI or an amended figure; use the originally filed AGI.
  4. Re-submit the e-file.

2Try entering 0 for the AGI

  1. If last year's return was filed late, on paper, or not processed by the IRS in time, enter 0 as the prior-year AGI.
  2. First-time filers should also try 0.
  3. Save and re-transmit your return.

3Verify your AGI with the IRS

  1. If you don't have last year's return, request a free tax transcript at irs.gov to see the AGI on record.
  2. Use the AGI shown on that transcript.
  3. Re-submit your e-file with the verified number.

Still stuck?

If your return keeps getting rejected with IND-031-04 even after trying the exact AGI and 0, you can still paper-file to meet the deadline. Official TurboTax support at ttlc.intuit.com can confirm your steps, and you're welcome to ask here about how to print and mail your return if e-file won't go through.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use last year's AGI or this year's?

Always use last year's AGI — the figure from the prior-year return you actually filed. It's how the IRS verifies your identity for this year's e-file.

When should I enter 0 for my AGI?

Enter 0 if you're a first-time filer, or if last year's return was filed late or hadn't been processed by the IRS when you submitted this year's return.

What if 0 doesn't work either?

Double-check the AGI on an IRS transcript. If e-file still fails, you can print and mail your return to file on time.
