Installation
TurboTax Error 1603: Fatal Error During Installation
Error 1603 is a generic Windows Installer failure that halts the TurboTax desktop setup. In most cases it clears up after you install as administrator, repair the .NET Framework, and pause your antivirus.
Error 1622TurboTax Error 1622: Error Opening Installation Log File
Error 1622 appears when the TurboTax installer cannot create or open its installation log file, usually because of a permissions or temp-folder problem. Running setup as administrator and clearing the temp folder typically resolves it.
TurboTax Won't Install on Windows: General Troubleshooting
If TurboTax desktop refuses to install on Windows with no clear error number, the fix is usually a combination of administrator rights, current Windows updates, paused antivirus, and a clean reinstall.
TurboTax Install Fails on Mac: How to Fix It
TurboTax can fail to install on a Mac when macOS is too old, Gatekeeper blocks the app, or the disk is short on space. Updating macOS, allowing the app to open, and freeing space usually fixes it.
TurboTax CD Not Reading: Disc Won't Install
When a TurboTax CD won't read or auto-run, the cause is usually a dirty or scratched disc, a finicky optical drive, or disabled AutoPlay. You can often launch setup manually or switch to the download version tied to your license.
TurboTax .NET Framework Error During Install
TurboTax relies on the Microsoft .NET Framework, so a missing or damaged .NET install will stop setup. Repairing .NET, running Windows Update, and reinstalling the framework usually clears the error.
Error 65535TurboTax Error 65535: Unexpected Error
Error 65535 is a catch-all "unexpected error" that often surfaces during installation when Windows Installer or leftover files are causing trouble. A reboot, clean reinstall, and running as administrator usually clears it.
Error 36TurboTax Error 36: Problem Copying Files
Error 36 means TurboTax couldn't copy one or more files during installation, frequently due to a damaged disc, a read error, or interference from security software. Switching to the download or cleaning the disc usually solves it.
Update
TurboTax Error 42015: Can't Download Updates
Error 42015 means TurboTax couldn't download an update, almost always because of a connection or security-software hiccup. Checking your internet, adjusting your firewall, and updating manually usually fixes it.
Error 1921TurboTax Error 1921: Service Could Not Be Stopped
Error 1921 shows up when TurboTax can't stop a running service in order to update it, typically because of permissions or a locked process. Running as administrator, closing background apps, and rebooting usually clears it.
TurboTax Update Not Working: General Fixes
If TurboTax updates won't download or finish without a specific error code, the usual culprits are your connection, security software, or permissions. Checking those and running a manual update typically gets you current.
Activation & License
Filing & Forms
TurboTax Error 190: Unable to Open Data File
Error 190 appears when TurboTax can't open your tax data file, usually because you're using the wrong year's program or the file is on a drive it can't reach. Opening the matching year and copying the file locally typically fixes it.
TurboTax State Return Not E-filing
If your state return won't e-file in TurboTax, it's often because the federal return must go first, the program needs updating, or your state has specific e-file rules. Working through those usually gets the state return transmitted.
TurboTax Form Not Available Yet: What to Do
When TurboTax says a form isn't available yet, it's usually because the IRS or your state hasn't finalized that form for the season. The fix is to check the forms-availability list, keep TurboTax updated, and file once the form is ready.
TurboTax Can't Print or Save as PDF
If TurboTax won't print or save your return as a PDF, the cause is usually an out-of-date program, a PDF reader issue, or a printer setting. Updating TurboTax, saving as PDF first, and checking your reader and printer usually fixes it.
TurboTax W-2 Import Not Working
When W-2 import won't work in TurboTax, it's usually because the EIN or import code is off, your employer's payroll provider isn't supported, or the data isn't ready yet. Verifying the details or entering the W-2 by hand resolves it.
E-file Rejection
E-file Rejected IND-031-04: Prior-Year AGI Mismatch
IND-031-04 means the prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) you entered to verify your identity doesn't match what the IRS has on file for you (the primary taxpayer). The fix is to enter the exact AGI from last year's accepted return, or 0 if that return wasn't processed in time.
Error IND-032-04E-file Rejected IND-032-04: Spouse's Prior-Year AGI Mismatch
IND-032-04 is the same kind of rejection as IND-031-04, but it's about your spouse's prior-year AGI not matching IRS records. Enter the spouse's exact AGI from last year's return, or 0 if that return wasn't processed in time.
Error R0000-507-01E-file Rejected R0000-507-01: Dependent Already Claimed
R0000-507-01 means a dependent listed on your return has already been claimed on another accepted return for the same year. The fix is to verify the dependent's SSN, determine who is actually entitled to claim them, and paper-file if you're sure you have the right to claim.
Error F1040-516E-file Rejected F1040-516: SSN Already Used
F1040-516 means the primary taxpayer's Social Security number has already been used on an accepted return for that year. The fix is to verify the SSN for typos, check whether you already filed, and if it points to fraud, contact the IRS and paper-file.
E-file Rejected: Employer EIN Doesn't Match
This rejection means the employer's EIN (Employer Identification Number) you entered from your W-2 doesn't match IRS records. The fix is almost always to re-enter the EIN exactly as it appears on your W-2 and re-submit.
Account & Login
TurboTax Payment Not Going Through
If a TurboTax payment won't go through, it's usually a card-detail mismatch, a bank hold, or a browser issue at checkout. Verifying your card information, trying another browser or card, and checking with your bank typically resolves it.
TurboTax Login and Account Recovery Issues
Login trouble with TurboTax usually comes down to a forgotten password or user ID, two-step verification, or a browser problem. The official account-recovery tools plus a clean browser session typically get you back in.
TurboTax Refund Status Not Updating
If your refund status isn't updating, remember that TurboTax only shows whether your return was accepted — the actual refund is tracked by the IRS. Use the IRS Where's My Refund tool and allow time for processing.
