TurboTax Install Fails on Mac: How to Fix It
TurboTax can fail to install on a Mac when macOS is too old, Gatekeeper blocks the app, or the disk is short on space. Updating macOS, allowing the app to open, and freeing space usually fixes it.

Symptoms
- •The installer won't open, or macOS says it's from an unidentified developer.
- •Drag-to-Applications fails or the app won't launch after install.
- •Setup stalls or reports it can't be completed.
What causes it
- ▸Your macOS version is older than what this TurboTax year supports.
- ▸Gatekeeper or privacy settings are blocking the installer.
- ▸Not enough free disk space.
- ▸A partially downloaded or corrupted .dmg file.
How to fix it
1Check your macOS version
- Click the Apple menu and choose About This Mac to see your macOS version.
- Compare it against the supported versions listed on the official TurboTax site for your tax year.
- If you're behind, update macOS through System Settings, then try again.
2Allow the app past Gatekeeper
- Open the .dmg, then right-click (or Control-click) the installer and choose Open.
- Click Open again to confirm you trust it.
- If it's still blocked, go to System Settings, then Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway.
3Free up disk space
- Open About This Mac and check Storage to see available space.
- Clear out large files or empty the Trash if you're low.
- Re-run the installer once you have room to spare.
4Re-download the installer
- Delete the existing .dmg file.
- Download a fresh copy from your TurboTax account.
- Open the new .dmg and drag TurboTax to Applications.
Still stuck?
If TurboTax still won't install after updating macOS and clearing Gatekeeper, the trouble may be tied to your specific Mac model or OS build. Official TurboTax support at ttlc.intuit.com can help with Mac-specific cases, and you can post your macOS version and the exact message you see here for additional ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Does TurboTax run on Apple Silicon Macs?+
Recent TurboTax desktop versions support Apple Silicon, but older years may not. Check the official system requirements for the tax year you're installing.
Why does my Mac say the app is from an unidentified developer?+
That's Gatekeeper being cautious. Right-clicking the installer and choosing Open, or using Open Anyway in Privacy & Security, lets a legitimate download through.
