TurboTax CD Not Reading: Disc Won't Install
When a TurboTax CD won't read or auto-run, the cause is usually a dirty or scratched disc, a finicky optical drive, or disabled AutoPlay. You can often launch setup manually or switch to the download version tied to your license.

Symptoms
- •Nothing happens when you insert the disc.
- •Windows or macOS doesn't recognize the CD.
- •The drive spins but the installer never appears.
What causes it
- ▸The disc surface is dirty, smudged, or scratched.
- ▸AutoPlay is turned off so setup doesn't launch on its own.
- ▸The optical drive is failing or the computer has no drive at all.
- ▸A temporary read error that a re-insert can clear.
How to fix it
1Clean the disc and re-insert it
- Gently wipe the shiny side with a soft, lint-free cloth from the center outward.
- Make sure there are no obvious deep scratches.
- Re-insert the disc and wait a few seconds for the drive to spin up.
2Launch setup.exe manually
- Open File Explorer and click This PC.
- Double-click your CD/DVD drive to view its contents.
- Find setup.exe, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
3Check AutoPlay and the drive
- Open Settings and search for AutoPlay, then make sure it's on.
- Try the disc in a different computer's drive to confirm whether the disc or the drive is the problem.
- If your computer has no optical drive, an inexpensive external USB drive will work.
4Switch to the download version
- Sign in to your TurboTax account where you registered the product.
- Locate the digital download for the same product and license code.
- Download and install it instead of using the disc.
Still stuck?
If neither the disc nor the download will install, there may be a hardware fault or a license question to sort out. Official TurboTax support at ttlc.intuit.com can help confirm your license and point you to the download, and you're welcome to ask here about getting a stubborn disc to read.
