TurboTax Error 1622: Error Opening Installation Log File

Error 1622 appears when the TurboTax installer cannot create or open its installation log file, usually because of a permissions or temp-folder problem. Running setup as administrator and clearing the temp folder typically resolves it.

Symptoms

  • Setup stops with "Error 1622: Error opening installation log file."
  • The install bar never reaches 100 percent.
  • You may see a brief flash of the installer before it closes.

What causes it

  • The folder the installer wants to write its log to doesn't exist or is read-only.
  • TurboTax lacks the rights to write to the temp directory.
  • A cluttered or corrupted Windows temp folder.
  • An interrupted earlier install left a locked log file behind.

How to fix it

1Run setup as administrator

  1. Right-click the TurboTax installer and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Approve the User Account Control prompt by clicking Yes.
  3. Let the install run all the way through without interruption.

2Clear the Windows temp folder

  1. Press the Windows key plus R to open the Run box.
  2. Type %temp% and press Enter to open your temp folder.
  3. Select everything and delete it (skip any files Windows says are in use).
  4. Empty the Recycle Bin, then try the install again.

3Confirm the temp path exists

  1. Open Run again and type %temp% to check that the folder actually opens.
  2. If it errors out, recreate the Temp folder under your user's AppData\Local directory.
  3. Restart the PC and run the installer once more.

Frequently asked questions

Is error 1622 caused by a bad TurboTax download?

Rarely. It's almost always about where the installer is trying to write its log file, not the file itself. Still, grabbing a fresh installer is a harmless thing to try.

Could a second Windows user account fix this?

Sometimes. If your main account has corrupted permissions, installing from a different administrator account can sidestep the problem.
