How to Activate TurboTax With Your License Code
Your license code is what unlocks the desktop software. Here's where to find it, how to enter it correctly, and what to try if activation gives you trouble.

What the license code is
The TurboTax license code is a 16-character string that proves you own the product for a given tax year. You might also hear it called the activation code or product code. Entering it unlocks the desktop software so you can prepare and file your returns.
This is an independent guide, not an official Intuit page. For help with your specific account, use the support options on the official TurboTax site.
Where to find your code
Where your code lives depends on how you bought TurboTax:
- CD in a box: printed on the sleeve or on a card tucked inside the package.
- Download from the official site: in your order confirmation email and in your account order history.
- Bought from another retailer: in the confirmation email or, for in-store purchases, on the receipt or activation card.
If you can't track it down, try searching your email inbox for the retailer name plus the word "code."
Entering the code
Open TurboTax. When the program asks for activation, type the code exactly as shown. It isn't case sensitive, but be careful with characters that look alike, like the number zero and the letter O, or the number one and a lowercase L.
After typing it in, click Continue or Activate. A successful activation usually takes just a few seconds when you're connected to the internet.
When activation is rejected
If the program tells you the code is invalid, walk through these checks:
- Confirm the tax year matches. A 2024 code only activates the 2024 product.
- Retype the code slowly instead of copying and pasting, since pasted spaces can break it.
- Make sure you're connected to the internet so the code can be verified.
- If you bought from a third party, confirm the code wasn't already used by checking the retailer's instructions.
Activating without an internet connection
Activation normally happens online, but if your computer is offline, TurboTax may offer a phone or alternate activation path. Reconnecting to the internet is almost always the simplest fix, so try that first before going down the offline route.
Keeping your code safe
Tuck your license code somewhere you'll be able to find it again, like a password manager or a note saved alongside your tax files. You may need it if you reinstall the software after switching computers or doing a clean reinstall. Treat it like a receipt you might need later on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse my license code next year?+
No. Each license code is tied to a single tax year, so you'll need a new product and code for the following year's taxes.
What if I lost my code completely?+
Check your purchase email and the order history with whatever retailer or service you bought from. If you bought directly from the official site, your account order history is the best place to look.
