Heads up: InstallTurboTax.us is an independent, taxpayer-friendly help site. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Intuit Inc. or TurboTax®, and we are here only to make your tax software easier to use. Always verify pricing and features on the official TurboTax site. Full disclaimer.

Before you begin

Installing the TurboTax desktop software goes a lot smoother when you have a few things ready first. The whole thing usually takes about ten to fifteen minutes, and most of that is just the download or copy step.

  • Your 16-character license code, which you'll find on the CD sleeve, in your purchase confirmation email, or in your account with the retailer you bought from.
  • A steady internet connection for activation and updates.
  • Administrator rights on your computer, since the installer needs permission to add files.
  • Around 1 GB of free disk space for the program, plus a little extra if you're also installing state products.

Just so you know, this is an independent help guide. We're not affiliated with Intuit, so always double-check pricing and product details on the official TurboTax website.

Step 1: Start the installer

If you have a CD, pop it into your optical drive. Windows usually launches the setup on its own. If nothing happens, open File Explorer, click on the disc drive, and double-click the file named setup.exe.

If you bought the download, open the file you saved (it's usually in your Downloads folder) with a name like TurboTax2024.exe. Double-click it to get started. When Windows asks whether to let the app make changes, go ahead and choose Yes.

Step 2: Accept the agreement and choose a location

Read and accept the license agreement to keep going. For most folks, leaving the default installation folder right where it is works perfectly. If you like to keep your programs on a separate drive, you can click Browse and pick another path, but honestly the default is the easy choice for almost everyone.

Click Install and let the progress bar finish up. Try not to let your computer fall asleep during this step.

Step 3: Enter your license code

When the program opens for the first time, it'll ask for your license code. Type those 16 characters carefully. The code isn't case sensitive, but it's surprisingly easy to mix up a zero with the letter O, so give those a second look.

If activation doesn't go through, make sure you're connected to the internet and that the code matches the tax year you're planning to file. A 2024 code activates the 2024 product, not a prior year.

Step 4: Install updates

Once you're activated, let TurboTax check for updates. Tax forms and calculations change all season long, and the version on a CD or in an early download is rarely the most current one. Grabbing those updates now means fewer surprises down the road.

If the automatic check doesn't kick in, you can start it yourself from the Online menu by choosing Check for Updates.

Fixing common install problems

Most hiccups come down to just a handful of causes:

  • Installer won't run: right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  • Code rejected: retype it slowly and make sure the tax year is right.
  • Stalls partway: temporarily pause your antivirus software, which sometimes blocks the installer, then give it another try.
  • No optical drive: if your computer doesn't have a CD drive, you can usually download the same product from your account on the official site using your license code.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install TurboTax on more than one computer?

TurboTax desktop licenses generally let you install on multiple personal computers in your household, though e-filing is capped at five federal returns per license. Confirm the current terms on the official site.

Do I need the CD after installing?

Nope. Once the program is installed and activated, you can tuck the CD away. Just keep your license code somewhere safe in case you ever need to reinstall.
