Why Deluxe is the default upgrade
Deluxe is the edition most paying TurboTax customers end up on, and the reason is pretty simple: it's the first tier that handles itemized deductions. If you own a home, pay mortgage interest and property taxes, made some real charitable donations, or have significant medical bills, itemizing on Schedule A can beat the standard deduction — and Deluxe is built to dig up those write-offs for you.
It includes deduction-search tools that walk you through 350+ possible deductions and credits, plus the ItsDeductible feature for putting a value on the goods you donated. If you're a homeowner with a fairly typical return, Deluxe is usually your sweet spot.
When to skip Deluxe
If you sold stocks, crypto, or other investments, or you've got any self-employment or gig income, Deluxe won't cut it — you'll get pushed to Premium. And if your return is genuinely simple, Free Edition may cover you at $0. Deluxe is the right call specifically when itemizing is your main need.
Frequently asked questions
Does TurboTax Deluxe include a state return?+
No — the advertised price is for federal only. A state return is an additional fee, typically around $59–$69, and you pay it when you file.
Is Deluxe enough for stock sales?+
Usually not. Reporting investment sales (Schedule D) means you'll need TurboTax Premium online.
