As a freelancer or 1099 contractor, you're basically running a one-person business in the eyes of the tax system. Your clients report what they paid you on 1099-NEC forms, but no taxes were taken out, so you're on the hook for income tax plus self-employment tax, which covers Social Security and Medicare. That sounds heavier than W-2 work, and it is, but you also get to deduct business expenses that regular employees can't.

Your return centers on Schedule C, where you report your income and subtract your business expenses to land on your profit. The lower your net profit, the lower your tax, which is exactly why tracking your deductions carefully matters so much. If you made quarterly estimated payments during the year, those get reconciled here too.

Our recommendation

TurboTax Premium (Online)

Premium is the online edition built for self-employment. It handles Schedule C, self-employment tax, and the deductions freelancers care about, with guided questions for your home office, mileage, and supplies. It replaced the old Self-Employed product, so it's the right online home for 1099 work. And if you'd like a human to double-check your deductions, the Live Assisted Premium version adds expert help.

Deductions you shouldn't miss

Common freelancer deductions include the home office, business mileage or vehicle costs, software and subscriptions, supplies, a portion of your phone and internet, professional development, and self-employed health insurance. The self-employment tax deduction is automatic. Premium asks about each category so you don't overlook one. Keep records that tie each deduction to your business, because a deduction you can't back up isn't worth claiming.

Quarterly estimated taxes

Since no one withholds tax from your 1099 income, the system expects you to pay as you go through quarterly estimated payments. If you didn't this year, you may owe a penalty, and TurboTax will calculate it. Going forward, it can help you estimate next year's quarterly payments so you're not caught off guard come filing time.

Frequently asked questions

I only made a little freelance money. Do I still need Premium?

If you have any 1099 or self-employment income and want to deduct expenses, you'll need a self-employment-capable edition like Premium. Even a small bit of Schedule C income calls for it.

What's self-employment tax?

It covers the Social Security and Medicare contributions an employer would normally split with you. As a freelancer you pay both halves, though you do get to deduct half of it. TurboTax calculates this automatically.

Can I deduct my home office?

If you use part of your home regularly and exclusively for your business, you likely can. Premium walks you through both the simplified and actual-expense methods and picks whichever gives you the better result.
