Which TurboTax Does a W-2 Employee Need?
Heads up: InstallTurboTax.us is an independent, taxpayer-friendly help site. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Intuit Inc. or TurboTax®, and we are here only to make your tax software easier to use. Always verify pricing and features on the official TurboTax site. Full disclaimer.
If most of your income shows up as a paycheck, your tax life is probably simpler than you'd expect. Your employer reports your wages and the taxes already taken out on one form, your W-2, and most of what you owe (or get back) was settled bit by bit during the year. For a lot of employees, filing really comes down to confirming those numbers, taking the standard deduction, and checking whether you qualify for a credit or two.
You'll stay in simple territory as long as you take the standard deduction and don't have side income, big investment sales, or unusual life changes. Things get a little more involved if you itemize, contribute to a Health Savings Account, switch jobs mid-year, or pick up freelance work. The nice part is you can usually tell which group you're in just by counting how many tax forms showed up in your mailbox.
TurboTax Free Edition (Online)
If you have one or more W-2s, take the standard deduction, and claim common credits, Free Edition was built for exactly this kind of return. It walks you through your wages, withholding, and basic credits without charging you for features you won't touch. About a third of filers qualify, so peek at the eligibility note before you dive in. And if your situation has even one twist, the software will let you know it's time to upgrade.
Alternatives to consider
TurboTax Deluxe (Online)
Details →If you want to itemize, made HSA contributions, donated a good amount, or just want extra help digging up every deduction.
TurboTax Live Assisted Basic
Details →If your return is simple but you'd feel better having a tax expert on hand to answer questions and look it over before you file.
When Free Edition is enough
Free Edition covers the most common employee setup: W-2 wages, the standard deduction, the Earned Income Tax Credit, and the Child Tax Credit. If that's you, there's no reason to pay a penny more. A few things will move you out of Free Edition, though, like itemized deductions, self-employment income, stock or crypto sales, and rental property. The good news is the software checks as you go and only nudges you to upgrade if you actually need to.
When to step up to Deluxe
Go with Deluxe if your itemized deductions are likely to beat the standard deduction, or if you have an HSA, sizable charitable giving, or other deductible expenses you want to make the most of. Deluxe also runs deeper deduction and credit searches. Plenty of employees who own a home or had a big medical year find that Deluxe pays for itself.
Prices change, so double-check the current cost and what's included on the official TurboTax site before you file.
Frequently asked questions
I have two W-2s from two jobs. Can I still use Free Edition?+
Usually, yes. Having multiple W-2s on its own won't disqualify you. As long as you're taking the standard deduction and don't have other complicating items, Free Edition can handle several W-2s just fine.
My employer offers a 401(k). Does that change which edition I need?+
Nope. Your 401(k) contributions are already baked into your W-2, so you don't enter them separately and they won't push you into a higher-tier edition.
Is a state return included?+
Online editions usually charge a separate fee for a state return, even on Free Edition in some cases. Check the current pricing before you start so there are no surprises when you reach the end.
